Lymphedema Management

Lymphedema Management

Lymphedema is the swelling of soft tissues as a result of the accumulation of protein rich fluid in the extra cellular spaces. It occurs most frequently in an extremity but can be seen in the head, neck, and abdomen.  We offer lymphedema management for patients with primary and secondary lymphedema with complete decongestive therapy (CDT).

•             Physical Therapy techniques to help manage your lymphedema include various manual and massage techniques, exercise, bandaging or compression therapies and education. A combination of any or all of these techniques in conjunction with your doctor’s care can help manage your swelling and promote faster wound healing.

•             Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): includes a variety of manual and massage techniques designed to clear the body’s natural drainage system and promote pumping of the excess fluids.

•             Exercise: We will provide exercise routines, based on your individual abilities and needs to be performed both in the clinic and at home.

•             Compression: Compression therapy, when needed usually starts with compression bandaging for a period at a time. When the limb reaches the desired sine the patient is then, fitted for a compression garment and is taught how to use and care for them.

•             Mobility and Strength training are also employed with lymphedema patients as well as other treatment approaches to insure the program is customized to meet your individual needs.
